I make free quilt labels upon request because I feel they are very important. All quilts tell a story and the story doesn't have to be a mystery to the viewer of the quilt. Whenever I see a quilt, I want to know who made the quilt, when was the quilt made and why the person made the quilt. Was it a gift for someone? Did they keep the quilt themselves? Was it handed down from generation to generation? Was it made to use and wear out? Did it commemorate a special event? Was it made just for fun?
Quilt labels are very important. They increases the value of your quilt. They also help identify it if it gets lost or stolen. On my personal quilts, I will sign my name directly on the fabric on the back of my quilt in case the label ever gets removed and then I sew my label over my signed name.
Quilt labels can be very detailed or they can be simple. At a minimum they should include:
1) The name of the quilt (a pattern or quilt block)
2) The quilter's name
3) The date the top was finished and the place where the quilt was made.
Below are three examples of information you might want to include on a quilt. I include a space so that you can write your name with a permanent pen. I can even include a photo if you send me the photo (it will be returned to you, or you can email me an image).
After I finish quilting your quilt top, upon request, I will make a free quilt label on my computer for you. All you need to do is give me the information you want on the label. Once you receive the label, just sew it on the back of your quilt. I usually hand sew my labels down with the same kind of stitch I used to applique. You can also use a blind stitch or a whip stitch to sew the label down. On my personal quilts, I even go around the edge of the label with embroidery.
